Eric Kennington
Painter, chiefly of portraits, and sculptor. Born 12 March 1888 in Chelsea, London, son of the painter T. B. Kennington. Studied at the Lambeth School of Art and the City and Guilds School, Kennington. Exhibited from 1908 at the R.A. and the Leicester Galleries. Served in France 1914–15. Invalided out of the Army June 1915. Official War Artist 1916–19. His first one-man show of ‘The Kensingtons at Laventie’ at the Goupil Gallery 1916 caused a sensation. Went to Arabia in 1920 to illustrate T. E. Lawrence’s Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Painted portraits of children on glass. His work as a sculptor includes the War Memorial to the 24th Division in Battersea Park 1924, and carvings on the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford on Avon, 1930. Official War Artist 1940–5. A.R.A. 1951, R.A. 1959. Died in Reading 13 April 1960 buried in Checkendon, Oxfordshire.
