Andrew acted as ‘Coastal Command’ consultant for this latest volume by Simon Parry and Mark Postlethwaite. It covers 19th – 25th August, a rarely covered part of the Battle of Britain where both sides regrouped before clashing in big combats on both 24th and 25th. Also covered is 1 (RCAF) Squadron’s disastrous debut into the Battle when its pilots shot down a RAF Coastal Command Blenheim fighter in error on their first operational sortie, killing both pilot and air gunner from 235 Squadron based at Thorney Island. The Canadians damaged two other Blenheim’s that formed the V shaped ‘vic’ both crash landed back at the airfield.
The air gunner Sergeant Daniel Wright’s body is washed ashore near Chichester after the plane came down in Bracklesham Bay he was 18 years-old. Wright was buried in his native Staffordshire, his pilot David Woodger from Old Coulsdon, Surrey posted as missing.
